5th and 6th Grade
Teacher: Lyn Armstrong

The fifth and sixth grade class was busy learning from experiences this school year. We did not just learn things in the classroom; we also learned from field trips, community service, and Student Council activities.

We began with a field trip to the Fulshear library, where we learned how to use the resources available to us there. In October, we went to the Texas Zoo in Victoria to learn how to identify poisonous snakes and spiders so we can safely investigate the world God made. We also went to Sea Center, a Texas Parks and Wildlife fish hatchery where we observed fish eggs, fry(baby fish) and adult fish; then we touched sea anemones and crabs in the touch tank. In November, we went to the Attwater Prairie Chicken National Wildlife Refuge where we hiked and learned about the prairie. At Stephen F. Austin State Park, a biologist talked to us about the mammals in our area and we observed skulls and pelts; and at Brazos Bend State Park, the students were able to pet a baby alligator and a tarantula! We enjoyed our field trip to the Alamo, Mission Espada, and Mission San Jose in February and we collected and identified plankton samples under microscopes at the Texas State Marine Center. In March, we went to Independence to the Texas Baptist Museum and sat in the pew where Sam Houston carved his initials! We also went to Washington-on-the Brazos to tour Independence Hall and the Barrington Farm. May finished the year with a tour-guided trip to Egypt and Wharton, where we learned about Gail Borden and the rich history found so close to home. We played vintage video games at the 20th Century Technology Museum and visited the TeePee Motel. To top off a great year, we took a marine biology boat trip in Galveston Bay with a marine biologist and watched candy-making at LA Kings on the Strand.

The students learned how to serve others like Christ served others. They escorted younger students to their cars as the SCA Eagle Patrol in the morning and afternoon and they led the pledges and Lord’s Prayer at assembly each day. Before lunch, three days each week, they read to the Pre-school and Pre-kindergarten classes. The class did a skit for Veteran's Day and made thank you cards for veterans.

In September, Student Council had a bake sale and purchased wall balls, hula hoops, and jump ropes with the proceeds. Student Council made paper recycling boxes for each classroom. We also took a field trip to Katy Christian Ministries to deliver the donations from our food drive. Each student made a personal service logbook and is learning how to keep track of community service hours. We were able to tour one of the facilities of the Star of Hope Mission when we delivered blankets that we collected at Thanksgiving. In December, we sponsored a toy drive to benefit the Salvation Army and bought gifts for 3 families in the Christmas Coalition. In February, the student council sponsored "Help Haiti Month" to donate to World Vision. Student Council's International Day was a great time for all. We enjoyed hearing about each class' country and tasting the food.

The fifth and sixth grade class had fun and enjoyed hands-on learning experiences. We look forward to future field trips and service projects as we serve God and learn how to be more like Christ.

Philippians 3:14

I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.
